Benefits of Using Herbal Tea for Overall Health
While the purpose of this article its to share how you can use herbal tea for hair growth, I’d be remiss in not mentioning its overall health benefits which include improving:
- Heart health
- Concentration
- Digestion
- Reducing inflammation
- Oxidative stress to the body caused by free radicals
- The immune system
- The effects of menstruation
- Relaxation of the body for improved sleep and stress reduction
Of course, the type of herbal tea you drink will determine the healthy benefits you can achieve. The net of it all is that when you make drinking herbal tea a part of your regular consumption, it can improve so many health issues and concerns.
How Herbal Tea Promotes Healthier Hair and Scalp
Herbal teas are rich in Vitamin A, B Vitamins, Vitamin C & Vitamin E. These vitamins are powerful antioxidants. Teas also contain minerals like Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium which can also protect the hair from UV damage and dryness.
In addition to the benefits of consuming herbal tea internally, topical application has its benefits too. When used regularly, herbal teas will support scalp health and growing healthier hair.
When applied to the hair and scalp, the properties in herbal tea will foster increased blood flow and blood circulation in the scalp. The anti-inflammatory properties of tea are what help to address the conditions that lead to hair loss.
In addition to the effects of herbal tea on the scalp, teas also have a significant effect on hair health. It’s an effective solution for those looking to achieve healthy hair growth.
Best Herbs for Making Hair Teas
Now that you see how beneficial herbal tea can be for your hair, you need to decide which teas you want to incorporate into your hair care routines. Each of the teas listed below have slightly different properties that yield different benefits. Also, the best teas are made with organic tea bags or organic herbs.
Black Tea – Contains a powerful blocker of the hormone DHT, which has been linked to hair loss when the body contains elevated levels. The high caffeine content also stimulates hair growth but this tea should not be used on a daily basis.
Green Tea – Helps to speed up hair growth by nourishing the hair follicles
Hibiscus Tea – Very beneficial to the scalp, I’ve discovered that hibiscus tea soothes an inflamed and itchy scalp. It’s also helps with preventing split ends
Chamomile Tea – Made from chamomile flowers, chamomile tea also helps prevent split ends while strengthening the hair
Oolong Tea – Can improve the health of your hair and scalp when used as a tea rinse which will be applied directly to the scalp. It also transforms dull hair into shiny hair
Peppermint Tea – a powerful growth stimulant, peppermint tea increases blood circulation in the scalp
DIY Herbal Blends
You can also use herbs (organic herbs also recommended) not normally found in tea, to create a DIY herbal hair tea. The herbs can also be combined to create a signature blend of hair tea.
The most popular for hair growth include but aren’t limited to:
Amla – strengthens hair follicles and visibly makes hair appear thicker over time
Henna – widely used by those with natural hair to strengthen, in support of length retention
Nettle – rich in the mineral silica, nettle leaf powder can be used to make a tea that strengthens the hair follicles and encourages hair growth
Rosemary – supports healthy hair growth by stimulating the scalp and strengthening the hair
Lastly, while you can use tea bags, loose teas tend to be a bit higher in quality and concentration. Also, when using loose teas, you can combine them to form a customized blend based on the properties of the tea you want for your hair.
3 Herbal Tea Recipes for Hair Growth
Below you’ll find three recipes for you to use herbal tea for hair growth. These recipes are easy to make and even easier to use. Because they are all natural and the base is water (preferably distilled water), their shelf life is short and should be refrigerated. It’s best to make small batches for this very reason.
The recipes below are intended for no more than 2-5 uses so there is zero waste. Each recipe will yield one cup of healthy hair tea. If you have more hair, double the recipe. If you have short hair, the amount yielded from the recipe should be sufficient.
DIY Hair Rinse
The most common way to use an herbal tea for hair growth is to make hair tea rinses. There are many combinations of herbs that can be used to create hair rinses.
Hair Rinse Ingredients

- green tea OR oolong tea bag
How to make a Hair Rinse
Allow tea bag to steep for at least 30 minutes. Toss tea bag. Then, add 2 drops of rosemary essential oil to the brewed tea before use. Essential oils will boost your tea rinse further. DIY Hair Spritz
The next most common way to use an herbal tea to help grow your hair is to create a hair spritz. This recipe will help add moisture and strength to dry hair.
Some people can add a hair spritz to their daily routine. However, most people cannot use a hair spritz daily. A hair spritz can cause strength overload. If you find that your hair feels a little dry after multiple uses, balance it out by applying a leave-in conditioner right afterward.
This recipe is best for use on curly hair or natural hair.

This recipe should be refrigerated and used within 3-5 days. If you find that you have any of the hair spritz remaining after 5 days, it can also be used as a final hair rinse.

DIY Base Liquid for Hair Masks
Alas, any of the herbal hair teas made can be used to create the base for mixing up DIY hair treatments. Once mixed, they can be used to blend up a hair mask.
The recipe below is just one base mixture than can be used. It’s my personal fave because it eliminates itchy scalp when used in conjunction with a scalp massage. Virtually any single herb can be combined to make a base liquid.
