Learn how to pack a kid-approved, healthy lunch

Since we don’t have children, it probably seems kind-of strange that I’m posting about how to pack a kid-approved healthy lunch, right? Well, I’m not going to tell you how to feed your kids, I can admit that it’s not my area of expertise… however I did ask an expert for help.

I figured the best person to talk to about packing a kid-approved, healthy lunch is a kid.

Not just any kid, but pretty much the coolest kid I know.

His name is Aengus. His mom and I are friends (and family too – like 2nd or 3rd cousins by marriage) Aengus was really excited to come over and show me how to pack a healthy lunch that’s kid-approved.  Not only is he totally adorable, but he’s also proof that kids will eat healthy foods!

Aengus’ family eats healthy so he learned from a very young age to eat healthy too. He actually eats healthier any other kid I’ve ever met, and for that matter, he eats healthier than most of the adults I know too! Now don’t get me wrong, he’s a kid and likes treats too, but they aren’t a big deal since he eats so healthy most of the time.

Getting your kids involved in planning/packing their lunches is the easiest way to pack a healthy lunch your kids will be excited to eat.  Even more-so, if they have an amazing lunch box and super cool containers that they can’t wait to use for school!

I put together a large assortment of healthy foods for Aengus to choose from to teach me what works & what doesn’t for his lunch.  Not all kids are going to like the same foods, but by getting them involved you’ll save lots of arguments and wasted food!

Anegus went with nitrate-free ham & turkey roll ups, sugar snap peas, cucumber, tomatoes and raw cheddar cheese cubes in his LunchBots Quad Stainless Steel Food Container and with iced coconut water in his Foogo Leak-Proof Straw Bottle

And in his Foogo Vacuum Insulated Leak-Proof Food Jar, he put together raw milk yogurt, fresh berries, chopped nuts and a drizzle of honey (we added the sprig of mint to make it look pretty, everyone wants to eat food that looks good!)

It’s pretty obvious by that big smile that Aengus is happy with his lunch. He added a peach and plantain chips packed in compostable sandwich baggie which made a totally awesome lunch, don’t you think??

  1. My son helps me to pack his lunch most mornings. His input is so important to ensure that he will be happy to munch on all of the goodies in his lunchbox. Some days I will put a little special note in with his lunch or surprise him by cutting his foods in to fun shapes like hearts. I try to pack as many whole foods as possible 🙂

  2. Using the Foogo has radically changed how I pack lunch for my kids, for the better! Especially during August and early September when it is sweltering in their non-air-conditioned school, I like to pack them something frosty, like fruit sorbet or frozen yogurt. They think it’s a total treat, but I know it’s full of nutrition to power them through their afternoon!

  3. I try to get my kiddos involved but it’s hit or miss getting them to help. I have a list that I have them pick from in advance. It has proteins, fats, fruits, veggies, and treats.

  4. Thanks for posting these great lunch ideas! My 3 year old won’t eat most veggies, but I hope he turns around soon. I have to send my 3 year old’s lunch to daycare everyday due to food allergies (to ensure he only eats what’s safe for him to have), and I would love to win this prize!
