I used to be the woman who heard “bicycle ride” and immediately said absolutely not. Now an afternoon on an e-bike—with Ray, friends, or Argos in his trailer—is one of my favorite ways to get outside. If you’re curious about starting, you’re in the right place.

This is where I’m bringing together the bikes I personally own, the gear we use, and the adventures that make us want to keep riding. Women over 40 are especially welcome. You don’t have to be training for anything to enjoy a beautiful day and a good lunch stop.

Longer days out: Ruby, my Heybike Hybrid

Ruby feels heavier and more substantial, especially along roads, and her seat is shockingly comfortable. On a 49-mile hilly Route 5 ride from Erie to the White Turkey restaurant in Ohio, I used mostly PAS 4 and finished with 40% battery remaining. That’s my experience on that ride, not a range guarantee—but it certainly has me planning more adventures.

Bring the dog: Argos’s fancy caboose

Comet is my ANIIOKI—the bike I call the Cadillac of our e-bike family. Think plush seat, smooth ride, and serious weight that feels closer to a motorcycle. I’ve ridden more than 120 miles on one charge with battery to spare, with about 75% of that riding on throttle only. That’s my personal result, and I’ll share more about this very different bike in a dedicated story.
