Diet Cokagne Cocktail Recipe aka "the Tom Hanks"

For me it was love at first sip! I honestly can’t think of a better way to spruce up that can of Diet Coke that’s hanging out in your fridge than this delicious new creation and say goodbye to using orange juice to spice up your glass of champagne!

And seriously, this cocktail definitely has the BEST NAME?! Right?!?! Pronounced Diet Cocaine, it really is catchy!

What is a Diet Cokagne Cocktail?

In case you missed the segment on Late Night Show with Stephen Colbert where the Diet Cokagne Cocktail was initially shared by filmmaker Tom Hanks (yes the actor); here is a clip for you (below) or watch the full segment HERE.

Move over Aperol spritz, Bellini and espresso martinis, Tom Hanks created the internet’s latest viral cocktail, The Diet Cokagne (which is also being called “the Tom Hanks” by the really cool folks from what I hear.) This is a shockingly delicious concoction that happened accidentally with a celebratory bottle of champagne was poured into Tom’s glass of soda.

“I’m not a big drinker. I don’t drink, so I usually have a Diet Coke,” Hanks told the host Stephen Colbert. But on this particular night, while champagne was getting passed around, Hanks caved. “I said, ‘Oh, give me a shot of champagne in there, for crying out loud. I said, ‘Well, I may be insane, but I want to … celebrate.’ So I had a sip of this.”

Hanks told Colbert the drink is about a 2/3 of a glass of Diet Coke and a “shot” of champagne, which turned out “delicious.”

Hanks’ Cokagne isn’t the first drink to mix cola with wine; from Spain, the Kalimotxo combines Coca-Cola and red wine, dates back to the 1920s. Cola-based mixed drinks are also a simple crowd-pleaser; think about how popular a whiskey or rum and coke are?!

While the “industry pros” say this drink fad will be short-lived, but I disagree! Think about how quickly the Skinny Margarita gained fame, after it was consumed on the Real Housewives and is still today a staple cocktail for many health conscious drinkers! I think the Diet Cokagne Cocktail Recipe aka “the Tom Hanks” is here to stay!

What’s in a Diet Cokagne?

Surprisingly simple and wonderfully delicious, there’s a reason this delicious 2 ingredient Diet Cokagne Cocktail is going viral!

Diet Cokagne Ingredients:

  • Diet Coke
  • Dry Champagne (or sparkling wine)

You’ll also need a tall glass and I highly recommend some really good nugget ice (if you’ve been looking to splurge on a fancy ice maker NOW is the time, we’ve had ours for 5+ years and love it)

Optional Diet Cokagne Garnishes:

  • Lime, sliced
  • Maraschino Cherries (with the stem)

How to make a Diet Cokagne Cocktail

A Diet Cokagne is one of the easiest cocktails to make at home. Start with a tall glass, filled with ice and fill it 2/3 of the way full with Diet Coke, roughly 6-7 ounces or 1 small can.

Then top off your glass with roughly 2 ounces of Dry Champagne… don’t feel pressured to measure you can do as much you want or even jus a little shot of champagne.

To finish off your cocktail, garnish your Diet Cokagne Cocktail with a slice of fresh lime and a maraschino cherry.

There’s just something magical that happens in that glass. The Diet Coke + Champagne combination takes on a flavor all its own, magically deliciousness!

And just look at all those bubbles!

Of course you can make smaller more petite cocktails in nice flutes for special occasions and even include Diet Coke in addition to a selections of juices at your next mimosa bar.

Is a Diet Cokagne Cocktail Healthy?

I am here to confirm that YES a Diet Cokagne is indeed a healthy cocktail, especially for anyone looking to reduce their sugar and/or carbohydrate intake, it’s also low in calories so it can fit into virtually any macro template! ! 1 – 8 ounce Diet Cokagne Cocktail has 29 calories, 1g carbs and 1g sugar.

Is a Diet Cokagne Keto Friendly?

What I really appreciated during the interview segment with Tom Hanks was his transparency that he (a) isn’t a big drinker and (b) is a Type 2 Diabetic. Since a Diet Cokagne Cocktail has approximately 1g of carbs per serving, it’s extremely low carb making it Keto friendly! Since it’s sugar-free it’s a great cocktail for anyone with T2D (type 2 diabetes)!

But before you start complaining; I respectfully understand that for some of you alcohol doesn’t fall into the healthy parameter and for others you may object to Diet Coke completely. I hear you and understand your perspective.

How to make a Diet Cokagne MOCKTAIL

For anyone abstaining from alcohol permanently or just wrapping up your dry January; you can still have a fun Diet Cokagne Mocktail by ditching the Champagne and use a Lime flavored sparkling seltzer water instead. It will dilute the Diet Coke slightly and the lime acidity will replicate the champagne flavor! Club soda will also work too!

Substitute for Diet Coke in a Cokagne Cocktail

If you aren’t a fan of Diet Coke and want a more natural option, I recommend using a cola that is sweetened with stevia instead of an artificial sweetener such as Zevia.

or if you just would prefer a different flavor (diet or non-diet) try a classic coke, cherry coke, etc!

What Champagne is Best for a Diet Cokagne Cocktail?

During Tom’s interview on the Late Show, the champagne they used to make their Diet Cokagne Cocktail was the delicious Veuve Clicquot Brut. However, at $50+ a bottle it might not be in everyone’s cocktail budget, I know it’s not in mine. (don’t get me wrong, I will absolutely splurge for a celebration or special occasion, but I’m definitely not spilling Veuve into Diet Coke!!)

In place of the bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne, if you want to reach for budget friendly dry champagne for your Diet Cokagne:

  • Brut Nature (bone dry)
  • Ultra Brut (very dry)
  • Brut (very dry)
  • Extra-sec (dry)
  • Sec (medium dry)

If you are looking for the healthiest champagne for making a Diet Cokagne, I strongly encourage you to check out Dry Farm Wines. They have the most outstanding, high quality & better than organic wines, you won’t be disappointed! Dry Farm Wines are also ZERO sugar, again making them the best choice for anyone looking to reduce their carbohydrate intake!

I’m sure that a Diet Cokagne would also be good with a sweeter sparkling wine like Prosecco as well, but that’s just not a fizzy drink that I gravitate to keeping stocked.. I prefer dry drinks!

How to Save a Bottle of Champagne for Later

Since a diet Cokagne cocktail only takes roughly 2 ounces of champagne per cocktail, a 750mL will make 12 drinks! So it’s highly likely you’ll have some champagne leftover. Previously I would hesitate to open a bottle of champagne, fearing it would go to waste if it wasn’t all drank in one evening. A Champagne Stopper is an essential to have on hand, I am stoked at how much more often I’ll pop open a bottle, knowing it will still be sparkly the next day (or 2!)

How to make a Diet Cokagne Cocktail Stronger

With only 2 ounces of champagne per cocktail, a Diet Cokagne is very low alcohol. This is amazing for many of you, however if you want a little extra OOMPH to your Cokagne simply add a shot (or 2) of vodka to your glass of ice first, then fill the glass 2/3 full with Diet Coke, leaving enough room for a heavy splash of champagne! Easy peasy!
