How to Make Canned Mushroom Soup Taste Amazing
Wondering how to make canned mushroom soup taste better? A little butter, extra mushrooms, heavy cream and a few pantry seasonings turn a can of condensed soup into a rich, creamy lunch. Life can be hectic, and lunchtime is when I’m usually trying to find something yummy that I can make in just a few minutes. This is my easy upgrade.

I admit when Ray mentioned just opening a can of cream of mushroom soup and (GASP) eating it for lunch, I nearly passed out. OH HELL NO!
Not in my kitchen, we aren’t eating canned cream of mushroom soup—YUCK!
But he proceeded. Opened, added water, heated and that was his lunch. Curiosity got the best of me and I tried a spoonful. It tasted exactly as I anticipated, tinny with nothing special. Blah. Certainly not as delicious as my homemade mushroom soups!
I love soup, and mushroom soups are one category that I’m REALLY GOOD at! When you have time to cook from scratch, here are a few of my favorites:

Upgraded Canned Mushroom Soup Ingredients:
This is a simple pantry-friendly recipe made with ingredients you can find at Aldi or your favorite grocery store. The extra mushrooms add texture, and the cream makes the broth richer.
- 1 (10.5-ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup—use your favorite name brand or store brand. Choose condensed soup, rather than ready-to-eat soup.
- 1 can mushroom stems and pieces—do not drain; the mushroom liquid goes into the soup, too.
- Heavy cream—fill the empty soup can once (1.313 cups).
- A pinch of paprika
- 2 tablespoons butter
- A pinch of celery salt or garlic salt
- A pinch of black pepper
My original Aldi estimate was about $3.50 for a batch, excluding pantry spices. Prices vary by store and over time, so use that as a rough reference.
How to Make Canned Mushroom Soup Taste Better
Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the condensed soup and the entire can of mushrooms, including the liquid. Fill the empty soup can with heavy cream and add it to the pan. Season with a pinch each of paprika, celery salt or garlic salt, and black pepper, then stir until combined and heated through.
Taste before adding more seasoning—the condensed soup and canned mushrooms already bring salt to the pot. For this version, use the cream and mushroom liquid instead of adding the water called for on the soup label.
A Few Simple Tips
Keep the mushroom liquid. It adds flavor and helps loosen the condensed soup. Use the empty soup can to measure the cream. That keeps this lunch easy and saves a measuring cup. Heat gently and stir. You only need to bring everything together and heat it through.
