How to make Broccoli into Slaw at home

Most often when we think of broccoli slaw, we’ll be heading to the grocery store to grab a bag of pre-shredded broccoli slaw mix, right?? But did you know that you can totally make your own broccoli slaw at home instead of buying a broccoli slaw bag!?! Let me teach you how!

Broccoli slaw is simply shredded broccoli stalks (much like how Coleslaw is made from shredded cabbage).

Anytime I use broccoli florets (often after making dishes like my Keto Broccoli Salad Recipe, Easy Keto Broccoli Cheese Soup with Chicken Recipe or Artichoke, Chicken & Broccoli Meatballs) I save the broccoli stalks to use later.

Use a sharp knife to cut the fresh broccoli, removing the raw broccoli florets from the raw broccoli stems.

Broccoli keeps for at least a week in the fridge, but the stems will keep even longer. My best tip for storing all vegetables is using THESE vegetable storage containers, or you can see them featured in my Fridge Clean Out Salad with Honey Poppyseed Dressing post.

Making a creamy broccoli slaw using the stalks from crisp broccoli (instead of a bag of broccoli slaw)

is also a great way to utilize a part of fresh broccoli vegetable that otherwise you would most likely have discarded.

How do you Shred Broccoli?

Then all you need to do to transform broccoli stems INTO slaw is to grate or shred them. I highly suggest using a food processor with a shredding disk. (grating and/or shredded by hand on a box grater IS POSSIBLE or even finely cutting into thin matchsticks, but in my opinion too much work!)

How to make broccoli slaw at hhome using a food processor

Funny story about my beloved Magimix Food processor, it was the very first product that I ever received as a part of a collaboration as a food-blogger way back in 2012!! 10 years later, it’s still working great and I highly recommend it!

When making broccoli slaw mix in a food processor at home, you can stick to all broccoli or add other veggies like carrots, red cabbage or cauliflower stalks, too! (I generally add a carrot for color) Just make sure there are no large pieces, just like when shredding cabbage to make a traditional coleslaw.
